How to update your bedroom on a budget

How to update your bedroom on a budget

How many times have you thought about updating your bedroom but felt like you can’t afford it? The idea of spending thousands on furniture alone is enough for us to put the idea in the ‘too hard basket’. But what if I told you it didn’t have to cost that much to give your room a whole new look?

The most helpful piece of advice I ever received opened my eyes to the idea of cost-saving via detail changes: “If you want a new look, don’t buy a new outfit – change your accessories and give your existing wardrobe a new feel for a portion of the cost.” (Thanks Mum!) So, rather than using all of your hard-earned savings to replace your bed, dresser, tables and flooring, let’s talk about how to completely reinvent your bedroom by updating the details:

First thing’s first – you’ll need a theme. This can be as simple as a colour, a style (i.e vintage or industrial), or a quirk that matches your personality (this could mean using your creative flair to upcycle/paint your existing furniture, making your own cushions for the bed, or having your favourite print on the wall – as long as the room screams “you”.) Next, you’ll want to take a look at what the most “visible” aspects of the bedroom are – what changes will make the most difference? For me, it’s the bedding, lamps, wall art, floor and decor.

Retailers like good old Kmart, Target and Big W have a charming range of bedspreads, coverlets and doona covers that can bring a breath of fresh air to any room. Their range is fully inclusive from single – king beds, and the best part is that these sets start from just $8.50! And don’t forget the cushions! For a bit of extra flair, why not convert an old shirt into a pillowcase, or better yet head to your local Spotlight and pick out a fabric that will compliment your theme perfectly.

No need to throw out your bedside lamps, why not just give them a ‘facelift’? Bunnings Warehouse has a huge range of lampshades starting from $13.50, and a huge selection of bulbs to complement your choice. Going for an industrial look? Get rid of the shade and choose a vintage filament bulb. Or, get yourself a black light bulb, or a coloured bulb – the opportunities are endless, as long as it matches your personality and room theme! I personally chose a Salt Lamp for my bedside table, as being a Mum who is currently feeding a newborn during the night, I love the soft glow it provides and the pink hues match my room decor perfectly.

Wall Art

Wall art is your best friend, and can really tie a room together. Just remember not to be afraid of it! If you’re renting, or not 100% sold on your art placement, secure them with some 3M hooks and you’re golden. Better yet, why not print the artwork yourself! Digital downloadable art is an affordable way to give any space a dash of colour or update a room with the latest trend in fashion. Print them yourself at home or print online via an online printing service, and save yourself up to 50% or more than if you were to purchase a print ready-made.

No need to rip up and replace your carpet when you can brighten your floor with a new rug! Did you know eBay has a huge range of different sized and styled rugs, with some beautiful shags! They are super competitively priced and by taking the time to shop around you can save BIG. I saved over $150 by buying my living room rug on eBay instead of via popular online retailers. Kmart has some lovely woven rugs for $29 that would beautifully suit a vintage theme. Or, for those who want to add a touch of quirkiness to their room, Fantastic Furniture has rugs shaped like clouds or the Star Wars logo from $30 – why not!?

Plants! I am obsessed with indoor plants at the moment, and I know I am not alone. Plants will give any bedroom a more welcoming vibe, as well as offering many great health benefits such as cleaning toxins from the air. For the plant owner novice or those with a black thumb, I recommend starting with the Zanzibar Gem or the Rubber Plant as they require little care and maintenance to survive. The real deal not for you? Ikea has you covered from only $5, you can bring your room together with a little artificial potted plant (minimum maintenance with maximum effectiveness!)

Kmart Australia is an amazing place to find bits and bobs to compliment the rest of the room’s look and tie your final theme together. And of course, no room’s ‘feel’  is complete without a little reed diffuser or a scented candle. Remember – lavender scents calm us, and fruity scents energise us – have your favourite on display as the cherry-on-top of a job well done!
